  • Iโ€™ll admit, this fried eggplant ๐Ÿ† sandwich is neither extremely photogenic nor easy to photograph. ๐Ÿ“ธโฃ

Just holding it in your hands guarantees that your fingers will be dripping with olive oil that will most likely reach your wrists by the time youโ€™re done eating the sandwich. Which makes it very hard to take a picture at the same time.โฃ
โฃ
Also, itโ€™s heavy. Like really heavy, because it requires about half a liter of olive oil to fry the eggplants. I know, just donโ€™t think about how many calories that is. Just donโ€™t. โฃ
โฃ
But hereโ€™s the thing. This sandwich is literally the most decadent sandwich. It is finger-licking, palm-licking, wrist-licking good. Consider it a labor of love, like most of my recipes. The tahini sauce I make in it is a sauce that I use on mostly everything (think salads, roasted vegetables, chicken, etc.) and the beef requires a mere 2 ingredients.โฃ

And by bake, I mean that I set myself up with time-consuming, labor-intensive baking projects like these cinnamon knots, so that I can focus on the task at hand instead of focusing on whatever might be bumming me out (not having a cat, wishing I could have a cat, COVID, what kind of cat to get, etc).โฃ

So if you too are bummed out and if you too like to bake when you're down, then I highly recommend making my chai cinnamon roll recipe with vegan chai glazing. And in case you need extra work, practice twisting them into knots instead of traditional rolls. โฃ

Pictured: my favorite meat on the BBQ = magret de canard au piment d'espelette. Basically duck breast with the skin and fat on, marinated in chili pepper from Espelette (in the Basque region, in the Southwest of France), then grilled to perfection on the plancha. I can't even share a recipe with you because there isn't one. It's basically this: find duck breast, score the fat, grill on the plancha. DONE. So yeah, that's why I'm just giving you duck porn instead. ๐Ÿ˜˜โฃ

Personally, I love to serve it with whole-wheat chapati or rice (or, if Iโ€™m being honest, both). This recipe is her way of doing it, and while it always tastes better when she makes it for me (doesnโ€™t everything?), I took notes while she showed me how to make it so that hopefully you can recreate her delicious Sambar recipe at home.โฃ

I've got a suggestion: you can make this super healthy version (VEGAN! GLUTEN FREE! REFINED SUGAR FREE! EVERYTHING FREE!) of my totally fatty/buttery/sugary chocolate chip peanut butter bars that I published on the blog a while back. 

(Or, instead of making this healthy version, you can make the regular one and not care about getting fat. It's your call! Personally, I alternate between both recipes just to tell myself I'm eating something healthy from time to time....)

  • What is your favorite thing to do when you travel? โฃ
I know that seems like a random question given the current context...but what do you miss most about traveling?โฃ

Personally, my favorite thing when I travel is to eat local food (duh). I don't really care about museums or monuments, as I feel that you really get the sense of a country and its people when you're sitting at a table with them. โฃ

The local food, spices, wine, and the way people eat is something that I studied extensively at University (my degrees are in Culinary Anthropology). โฃ
โฃ
I find it fascinating how in countries like France, Italy, and Spain, you can travel just a few kilometers, and the entire culinary landscape changes drastically.โฃ
โฃ
For example, I thought I always hated Brie. And don't get me wrong, I've eaten some amazing Brie in fancy Parisian restaurants and bought some of the best I could find at MOF cheese shops....but nothing changed my mind more than when I moved to Fontainebleau (a mere 60 km from Paris) and tried the local Brie. ๐Ÿคฏโฃ
โฃ
Now, Brie is my absolute favorite cheese, and I've braved confinement, rain, ice, hail, and heatwaves to stand for hours in line at the local market to buy this totally INSANE Brie from a local 'affineur'. Is it worth it? โฃ
